Suzanne Pretorius is an Online Tutor at AAA Tutoring – Africa
Hello! My name is Suzanne and this is my very first profile post ever! EEEEK!
It’s so exciting! Currently I home-school my two daughters a 3rd and 5th grader. I also teach English online for AAA English.
Being a teacher you definitely have to be adaptable and flexible. The most fabulous part of my job is my students.
I am always pleasantly surprised and grateful for what Young Learners can add to a lesson and what I can learn from them.
My passion is to teach diversity, ensuring that education is accessible and rigorous for all.
There is so much we can learn from each other. Whether in-person or online, school should be a place where students feel safe to take risks and have fun while doing it.
It is my goal that students feel challenged, inspired, and interested in their learning.
These are some of the teaching styles and tools I use:
Fun with Flash Cards!
Using flash cards I can determine:
- Which vocabulary they already know.
- Elicit new vocabulary.
- Practice pronunciation.
- Controlled Practice.
- Freer Practice.
Playing games with flash cards enforces:
- Focus and memory – by playing the eliminate a card game the student focuses and recall memory.
- Further repletion of the learnt language is done by doing lip reading this supplements speech understanding while using prior knowledge to fill the gaps of the message being communicated. The combination of visual and body cues serves to increase one’s confidence in their ability to communicate.
- Guessing is useful for students’ ability to recall information—even when the guesses are wrong. Despite its popularity, memorizing information is one of the least effective learning strategies. In the rote memorization condition, they simply memorized and recalled the words they were shown.
Try it, its great fun!
If you think you have seen it all then guess again.
Kids can learn new vocabulary and grammar watching their favourite cartoon and answering the questions to it. This is extremely entertaining, captivating and kids love it.
Chilling with music!
Incorporating music into my lesson is an awesome way for the kiddos to learn all four English skills. The best part of it is that the kiddos learn by listening to their favourite artist.
Ending a Lesson:
Ending a lesson with a challenge creates creativity, teambuilding and improves self-moral.
